When Do I Use This?

Use this when you want to give users additional relevant links to content that is not a part of the taxonomy. (e.g. DAP experiences, brand showcases, buying guides) This is typically used on soft lines vertical pages and not on hard lines vertical pages. (see research below)

Usage Guidelines

1. Content Consistency

When manually creating links make sure that the link text matches the names of the actual categories as found in the taxonomy to avoid confusion.

Use our category names as link text.

Don't customize the link text for categories.

2. Categorization

Have a header above the links that ties them together.

Use non-actionable titles to introduce each section.

Don't put a list of links together that can be grouped into sections.

3. Promotions should not be placed in the left navigation.

There are other components to be used in the body of the page for promotional content.

Curated left hand navigation should be used to link to sub-pages of the current page (Use the Left Nav-Dynamic when possible), brands and other experiences.

This example is using this module to create links that are promotional.

4. Follow Capitalization Standards

Links and titles in the left hand navigation should all be Title Case.

Left hand navigation using title case.

Left hand navigation using mixed cases.

Rationale

This is an industry wide standard way of exposing categories as navigation.

Research

Softlines Vertical Testing

Left hand navigation performed poorly for hardlines verticals and Bed Bath Home, but performed well on all other softlines verticals.
